Mounts in MMORPGs

For me, mounts are a major part of any MMORPG, as I'm sure they are for many of you too. Their role in the games varies from functional to a symbol of your status in the game. Mounts can provide a speed boost for travelling across vast maps, protect you from nearby enemies and even give you new skills and greater damage in battle. Beyond this though, mounts present a challenge for players to get their teeth into as they often require carrying out a number of quests, reaching a certain (and commonly high) level or dedicating a large amount of time to raising adequate funds in order to be able to purchase one. Because of this, acquiring a mount is often a very rewarding experience.

On top of this, let's not forget the amount of charm that mounts and pets can lend to a game. I recently reached level 40 on Shaiya and raised enough cash to buy myself a black panther mount. The mount is certainly useful as it greatly increases the speed at which I can get to where I'm going but more often I find myself forgetting about my destination and taking my new pet for a joyride, content in watching it bound across the landscape with my assassin safely on its back.

Thinking that I might not be the only one out there who prioritises mounts and pets in the screening process for new MMORPGs, I've decided to compile a list of games that include mounts along with details of each of the animals. Bear with me as this is going to be quite an extensive project but I think that it will prove useful or at least interesting to anyone who happens to read.

MMORPGs (that I have played) with mounts:

Shaiya
Last Chaos
Perfect World
World of Warcraft

This is an extremely detailed site with a one-page gallery of all(?) the World of Warcraft mounts. There is information on how to obtain each mount and which classes/alliance it is limited to as well as bonuses which the mount gives. Aside from that, there are so many pretty pictures that just looking at the mounts can be a source of entertainment.

Hello, I was reading your post about Shaiya and it's mounts and found it very amusing. I do have two questions about them though. Number one, are they transferable through your warehouse to different characters on the same account? And number two, can a different race ride on a double mount? Like the silver lions belong to the elves but could a human ride on the back of one? Anyway, thanks and I hope you know the answers! ^^

Thank you very much for your comment. I'm glad to hear that you've enjoyed reading my posts (and glad that someone outside of my circle of family and friends has visited my site).

Yes Shaiya's mounts can be transferred through the warehouse. I haven't done this myself yet as only one of my characters is a high enough level to be able to use one, but people commonly do this to transfer them between characters.

As for the double mounts; so far as my Vail assassin I have ridden on the back of a blood wolf (Vail mount) and as a passenger on a Nordein red dragon, which seems to prove that race doesn't matter for a passenger. I'm just trying to remember whether I've ever seen a Deatheater riding a blood wolf though...

So:
Humans can ride backseat on Human mounts
Humans can ride backseat on Elf mounts

Elves can ride backseat on Elf mounts
Elves can ride backseat on Human mounts

Vail can ride backseat on Vail mounts.
Vail can ride backseat on Nordein mounts.

Nordein can ride backseat on Nordein mounts.
...I'm not so sure about whether they can ride on the back of Vail mounts as there's a fair difference in size.

There's picture evidence of everything I've claimed concerning two-seater mounts here: http://forums.aeriagames.com/viewtopic.php?p=2277479#2277479

I'll ask about the Deatheater on a wolf thing next time I play.
