Naruto – Manga volume 1

Title: The Tests of the Ninja

What happens:

We meet Uzumaki Naruto, Konoha’s number one hyperactive ninja as he attempts to graduate from the ninja academy in Konohagakure, the village hidden in the leaves.

Favourite bits:

Naruto sitting on a swing outside the ninja academy, watching the other children being praised by their parents for graduating.  Very moving.

The strong relationship between Naruto and Iruka, that Kishimoto shows straight away.  At first Iruka seems unduly harsh towards Naruto but his support and affection quickly show through.  The two make quite a sweet double act.

Naruto’s cute breakfast scene in Chapter 3: Enter Sasuke.

The world famous Sexy Jutsu is a whole lot funnier on the page than I ever expected it to be.  Never fails to make me giggle.  Konohamaru’s lesson in the jutsu is especially funny, mostly due to the ‘Sir, yes sir!’ seriousness that the two boys treat it with.  The ninja harem’s a very clever idea too, albeit slightly evil.  Nosebleed of the century.

The facial expressions of the two boys during Sasuke and Naruto’s classroom face-off.

Naruto’s WOO-HOO! and Sakura’s RATS! when it’s announced that they’ll be teamed together and…Sakura’s OH YEAH! and Naruto’s BUMMER! when Sasuke is added to the team in the next panel.  (Sasuke remains unaffected throughout.)

The little insight we get into Sasuke’s life when he defends Naruto, explaining to Sakura that growing up with no family means a world of loneliness, not just free rein and a lack of responsibility.

1000 Years of Pain!

Sasuke’s incredible agility and flexibility in the fight against Kakashi.  Proof: Kakashi actually has to put down his book.

The sound effect SMEK.
